Playful Pal: Jack Russell Terrier

An English dog breed, originally bred to hunt foxes, the Jack Russell Terrier is known for its intelligence, energy, and clever antics.

Jack Russells are highly intelligent dogs that are extremely trainable with well-seasoned dog trainers. This is why the breed is a well-known star in movie and television roles. But that intelligence can work against a novice dog owner. It is imperative to start training early and provide ample exercise and mental stimulation. A bored Jack Russell will easily come up with his own idea of fun, and it likely won’t be a pretty scene.

Jack Russells are well suited for active families - they make an excellent running partner and will outlast any human at fetch. They are loyal and loving to humans and are generally good with children. As constant balls of energy, though, know that this dog breed also has a taste for chewing, digging, barking, and chasing other small animals with violent fervor.

Though generally a healthy breed when adopted through a reputable breeder, some documented health concerns include eye problems like glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, congenital deafness, and patellar luxation. Breeders should be able to show genetic documentation that clears a puppy’s parents from these diseases.

Due to their active and curious minds, it is essential to provide Jack Russell Terriers with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Regular walks and off leash play will do well to burn off stored energy during the day. Be sure to provide dog appropriate chew toys, or a Jack Russell will decide for himself what to chew. Quaker Pet Group’s Chew Guard Technology is made especially for clever chewers like the JRT. Featuring a durable mesh liner and double stitched seems, Chew Guard Technology can be found in goDog’s line of colorful plush toys and cozy dog BedZzz™.

For families with patience, energy, a sense of humor, and a collection of entertaining dog toys, the Jack Russell Terrier can be an excellent family pet!
